McLaren MP4-12C Spider

McLaren is planning to produce a Spider version of its MP4-12C supercar. Here are illustrations of the amazing drop-top. This model will prove to be a formidable rival to the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Cabriolet.

McLaren, a Surrey-based company, will boast a retractable hard-top, believed to be the work of convertible expert Webasto. An area of the Woking factory has been devoted to ‘RHT [retractable hard-top] Sub Assembly.’ It is likely that the tiny hood is made from lightweight aluminum or even carbon fiber. This allows for the hardop to be folded away behind the occupants’ heads ahead of the engine. The Spider is believed to weigh about the same as the car with a fixed hardtop. Powering it is the same 600bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8. In 3.5 seconds, the car will be able to reach 0-60mph and have a top speed of 200mph. Prices start from £175,000.
